WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
Mechanical engineering is a constantly developing, versatile and modern science. In addition to traditional mechanics and machine building it also includes for example robotics, industrial internet and 3D scanning. Mechanical designing uses modern calculus, simulation and design software tools as well as automated production and manufacturing technologies when developing intelligent machines and equipment for the future needs.
Mechanical Engineering and Production Technology Degree Content
The mechanical engineering and production technology degree programme allows students to focus on production systems, design of mechanical systems or simulation and modelling.
The extent of the degree programme is 240 credits and the duration is approximately 4 years. It is also possible to graduate sooner for example with summer studies and possible previous knowledge and competence or studies from the field. The degree includes also work placement of 5 months and a final thesis.
In addition to general engineering skills, you will develop deeper knowledge in the design processes and methods of machines, equipment, products and structures as well as in production technology, production planning and modern manufacturing methods. The first two years of studies are similar for all mechanical engineering and production technology students, and after that you can choose one or more of the following 15 credit profiling study modules:
- design of industrial appliances
- structural analysis
- manufacturing automation in the workshop.
Profiling study modules are in total 75 credits, so students may also choose:
- advanced mathematics study module, which is recommended for students who aim to apply for master studies after completing bachelor’s degree
- studies from the mechanical engineering degree programme conducted in Finnish language
- industrial management online studies (read more about these below)
- studies from other degree programmes at HAMK (for example 15 credit Maintenance study module from electrical and automation engineering in Valkeakoski campus)
- summer studies from HAMK and other universities of applied science
- international exchange studies in partner university abroad.
HAMK encourages all students to carry out part of the studies abroad in international partner universities around the world. There is also an additional option to study abroad by completing a double degree partly at HAMK and partly at Via University College in Denmark.
Industrial Management studies complete mechanical engineering studies
The profession of an engineer requires not only professional skills and competence but also understanding of entireties as well as managing them. In the studies of industrial management, logistics and business operations you will combine the perspective of business economics to your engineering studies. You will learn to lead and manage projects, plan and develop production, supply chains and industrial services. All these are extremely important skills needed in the field of engineering.
Industrial management studies consist of four 15 credit study modules and a couple of individual courses, creating in total more than 70 credits of optional professional studies. You can choose to study 1-4 modules (15-60 credits) from these studies.

Mechanical Engineering and Production Technology graduates have a wide range of career choices around the world. A typical employer is a design engineering office, small- or medium-size workshop or a large global company. A common career path may lead to expert tasks, managerial duties or entrepreneurship.
