Teaching style in Denmark

  1. When you come to Denmark to study, you will probably experience a different teaching style than the one you are used to. The main principle in Danish education is that the student has the responsibility for his/her own education.
  2. You will experience that we emphasize the contact between staff and student, and this manifests itself in the way the students and the staff communicate in the classroom. In Denmark don’t practise one way communication, where the teacher is lecturing to an audience of patiently listening and silent students.
  3. The students are expected to ask qualified questions and overall there is an exchange of ideas and knowledge, which everyone benefits from.
  4. Quite a bit of the teaching will not be situated in the classroom, but rather in different forms of group- and project work, where the teacher’s role is more that of a consultant.
  5. In Denmark you will learn how to work not just as an individual, but also as member of a group, where teamwork, cooperation and communication are essential tools to succeed.
  6. If you are unaccustomed with this style of teaching it can be a challenge, however as with all other challenges, if you are ready to meet them, you will acquire more experience and more daring.
  7. As a result of both project work and a more demanding style of teaching, you will not only grow as an individual, but also be more valuable to future employers, who set a premium on this kind of experience with graduates, as it reflects ‘the real world’, where your professional future lies.
